Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Office Word 2003 in 24 Hours

Hour 24. Smart Documents and XML

With Word 2003, Microsoft extended Word's capabilities in two major areas. First, Word is now XML -enabled , meaning that you can use it to read, create, and save documents in XML (Extensible Markup Language). Second, software developers can create Smart Documents ”highly interactive XML-based documents that are tightly integrated into a company's business processes. If you work with highly structured documents that are an essential part of your organization's products or services, if you frequently need to present the same document in multiple formats ”perhaps as a Word document, a Web page, a PDF file, and online help ”or if your company has informed you that it is converting to XML, you will probably find the information presented in this hour useful. If you don't work with Word in these ways, you might still want to skim this hour for general edification, but don't get hung up on the details.
