What to Get for RPM Installation
To get the right files, go to the MySQL Web site and find the RPM files for Linux. The following list outlines the files you will need to develop the applications in this book. If you are transferring files in a Windows environment, you will probably want to use an FTP program or the ftp client that comes with Windows to avoid corrupting the files in transfer, which can happen if you download them with your browser.
Getting the Latest and Greatest
In this section, you ll see full filenames. You will probably want to get the newest version when you go to download the rpm files. I am using the full filenames as examples of what was current when this book was written, but that might not be current when you are reading it. |
To install via RPM, you need to get the following three files (or their most recent equivalents):

MySQL-3.23.25-1.i386.rpm. This is the server piece. It contains the actual database server that receives requests and returns results.

MySQL-client-3.23.25-1.i386.rpm. This is the client piece, most notably the mysql program that gets you to the mysql> prompt, which in turn allows you to send queries to the database.

MySQL- devel -3.23.25-1.i386.rpm. From this file, you need the C API header files.
Place these files anywhere you re comfortable; for this example, they re in the /usr/tmp/ directory.
