RADIUS is based on the client/server model and was originally developed by Livingston.

Features of RADIUS

One of the benefits of using RADIUS is that the protocol has strong accounting features. Also, RADIUS uses User Datagram Protocol (UDP) as its transport protocol and combines the services of authentication and authorization into one service. Further, RADIUS encrypts only the passwords in a packet when communicating between the RADIUS server and the router. RADIUS does not provide multiprotocol support and does not support AppleTalk Remote Access (ARA), NetWare Asynchronous Server Interface (NASI), NetBIOS Extended User Interface (NetBEUI), or X.25 packet assembler/disassembler (PAD).

RADIUS is based on the client/server model.

RADIUS only encrypts passwords in data packets. The remainder of the packet is cleartext.

ARA, NetBEUI, NASI, and X.25 PAD are not supported by RADIUS.
