The Patient with Urinary Tract Infection

Marilyn E. Levi

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are some of the most common infections experienced by humans, exceeded in frequency among ambulatory patients only by respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. Indeed, bacterial infections of the urinary tract are the most common cause of both community-acquired and nosocomial infections for patients admitted to hospitals in the United States. The prognosis and management of UTIs, however, depend on the site of infection and any predisposing factors.
