Routing and gateways were covered briefly in Chapter 22, "Principles of TCP/IP Networking," as was the concept of NAT (Network Address Translation). Chapter 23, "Configuring Basic Networking Services," also covered routing a little bit, but mostly in the context of configuring a host to use a router. This chapter explains how to configure FreeBSD to serve as a router or a gateway as well as how to set up Network Address Translation to provide routing services to an entire subnetwork. The chapter begins with a few short definitions of each of the items we will be discussing.
