Robin Williams Cool Mac Apps. A guide to iLife '05, .Mac, and more.

The main Backup window is where you select files to backup. In addition to the QuickPick options that are listed here, you can add other files or folders to the list.

Tip

The pop-up menu allows you to choose to save files to your iDisk, an external drive, or a removable CD or DVD (DVD option is only available on Macs with a DVD-writeable drive built in or attached).

When Back up to iDisk is selected, the iTunes QuickPick package includes only playlists, due to the limited storage space that is available with iDisk storage.

When Back up to CD/DVD or Back up to Drive is selected, the iTunes QuickPick package includes the entire Library of song files.

The disc spanning technology that Backup uses to copy large files to multiple discs means you have virtually unlimited backup storage.

  • From the pop-up menu, choose the location to which you want to save backed-up files. Or choose to "Restore" backed-up files and copy them to your hard disk.

  • The QuickPick items in the "Items" column (package icons) are groups of files that are all backed up at once.

  • When you choose "Back up to iDisk" in the pop-up menu, a status bar shows how much space on your iDisk is used (dark green shading), how much space will be used after you backup the currently selected files (light green shading), and how much total space is available (white shading).

  • Items that are checkmarked in the Back Up column will be backed up when you click the "Backup Now" button, or when a backup is scheduled.
