Formatting Page Numbers
In this case, the word “format” does not refer to the appearance of the page numbers, but the placement of them.
Using our preferred method of page numbering, you’ll align the page number wherever you like by using the alignment buttons on the Formatting toolbar.
In other words, align just as you would any other text. The Format Page Number button is more useful for telling the page numbering where it should begin numbering.
To have page numbering begin on the 2nd page and continue numbering throughout the document:
-
File → Page setup and choose Different First Page from the Layout tab. Do this BEFORE you insert your headers and footers.
-
Insert the page number.
To have page numbering start on the first page of each chapter or section:
-
Set up section breaks in your document. You need a section break on the last page of each section.
-
Insert the page number and choose to “Start at” Page 1. Depending on your header/footer settings, you may need to do this in each section.
To include Chapter numbers in your page numbering:
-
You must first use a heading style, preferably Heading 1. You must also have the heading style numbered, preferably using Outline numbering.
-
You must not use the style for any other purpose except as Chapter titles.
-
Hit the Insert Page Numbers button on the header/footer toolbar and choose to “Include Chapter Number.”
