| Objectives This chapter covers the following Microsoft-specified objectives for the "Managing and Maintaining a Server Environment" section of the Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Environment exam: Troubleshoot print queues The purpose of this objective is to teach you how to control the access and the type of access allowed printing devices in the Windows Server 2003 environment. You need to know not only how to add and configure print devices, but also how to manage and troubleshoot problems in a networked environment. Become very familiar with the terminology associated with printers in Windows Server 2003 because Microsoft's definitions are not necessarily what you would expect. For example, you need to be able to identify the different components that are involved in the printing process and know how to determine which component is failing when you can't print. To perform the exercises in this chapter, it's not essential that you have a physical printer attached to your server. Most of the exercises will work fine because they're tied to the logical printer configuration. Just remember not to attempt to print any test pages! As mentioned in previous chapters, you must become familiar with the Windows Server 2003 interface. Working with a Windows 2000 server will not be sufficient. Microsoft has made a large number of changes to the printer interface in Windows Server 2003. Using a Windows Server 2003 test server will be essential. Although it would seem that because Microsoft dedicated only a single objective to the print process, it might be lightly covered on the exam. This is far from the case. Historically, printing has been heavily emphasized on the Microsoft exams, and it is an essential part of your duties as a system administrator. |
