Cisco 802.11 Wireless Networking Quick Reference

The WLSE is managed from a dashboard on its home page. The dashboard is comprised of several tabs. The tabs give a brief explanation of what they manage. After you select a tab, other subtabs are shown. Table 10-1 explains each tab of the WLSE dashboard, tells its purpose, and includes a description of each subtabs.

Table 10-1. The Dashboard's Tabs and Subtabs

Tab

Subtabs and Description

Faults

Used to display and manage fault information. Subtabs include:

  • Display FaultsDisplays device-based faults. Manages fault settings. Sets and manages thresholds.

  • Manage Network-Wide ProfilesEstablishes and manages network-wide profiles.

  • Notification SettingsManages settings to send fault information.

Devices

Used to manage and discover devices on your WLAN. Subtabs include:

  • DiscoverRuns device discovery, manages polling, manages devices, runs inventories, and views logs.

  • Group ManagementEstablishes and manages groups of devices.

Configure

Used for the configuration and configuration management of devices. Subtabs include:

  • TemplatesCreates configuration templates for both IOS and non-IOS APs.

  • ArchivesManages and stores configurations.

  • JobsSends templates to APs.

  • Auto UpdateAutomatically configures APs.

Firmware

Used to update and manage firmware updates. Subtabs include:

  • ImagesRetrieves firmware for APs and bridges from the desktop or Cisco website.

  • JobsSends the firmware to APs.

Reports

  • Used to view reports about devices, radios, and clients. Also used to track trends. Subtabs include:

  • Device CenterDisplays reports for a specific device.

  • Radio ManagerDisplays radio management reports.

  • Wireless ClientsDisplays client association information.

  • CurrentContains tools for viewing, exporting, and e-mailing current reports.

  • TrendsContains tools to view, export, and e-mail WLAN trends.

  • RealtimeProvides detailed information on several APs.

  • Scheduled Email JobsContains tools to manage e-mail functions.

Radio Management

Used to manage radio features. Subtabs include:

  • Radio MonitoringMonitors the WLAN and collects radio information used for configuration, rogues AP discovery, and interference detection.

  • AP Radio ScanEnlists APs to characterize the radio environment that is used for RM-assisted configuration, preparing coverage maps, and rogue location.

  • Client WalkaboutUsed with Cisco Compatible Extension (CCX) clients to walk a client around your location and gather radio data. This information is sent back to the client's AP for further analysis and transmission upstream to the WLSE.

  • RM Assisted ConfigurationConfigures APs and uses data collected from client walkabouts and AP radio scans.

Location Manager

Used to graphically display WLAN environments after existing, known APs are imported to the application. This includes the location of known APs and an estimation of where unknown APs might be placed. It also shows signal strength.

Administration

Used to manage the WLSE device. Subtabs include:

  • ApplianceManagement tools for the WLSE system, including diagnostics, data backup, time settings, and NTP servers.

  • SystemDisplays information about firmware versions.

  • User AdminManagement tools for users and profiles.

  • My ProfileManagement tools for your own profile.

  • LinksManages links to other systems, including other WLSEs and CiscoWorks servers.

Note

For this discussion, WLSE version 2.9 is used. If you use a newer or older version of WLSE, you might encounter some different options.

The WLSE is a robust management tool with many ways to configure, manage, and view the devices on your WLAN. It is not possible to explore every feature of the WLSE here. However, the following sections explain how to manage some of the more popular and useful features of the WLSE.
