Multitool Linux: Practical Uses for Open Source Software

Summary

The goal of this chapter was to introduce you to a variety of technologies available under Linux that will aid you in creating music. I hope I have convinced you that it is possible to use Linux for more than a file server, DNS, or Web server. It can be a truly useful music workstation if properly configured with the right software. Given that, I have to confess that there are even more tools "out there" that I did not cover, such as:

Audio editors

Audio recorders

Effects processors

Format converters

Oscilloscopes

Patch editors and librarians

Samplers

Spectrum analyzers

More software is appearing for Linux every day, giving the Linux community a continually growing list of quality music-creation applications to choose from. Choosing which applications are appropriate for your projects will be the hardest part of the process. I've already got my list of favorites and, hopefully, you will find yours.
