Redo log files are Oracle's way to record all the changes made to the data in the database to provide the ability to recover from media failure or system failure in the database, in the instance, or on the server on which they are running. This chapter provides information on redo log files, their maintenance, and where to gather information concerning them.

Redo log files are organized into groups. At least two groups are required for an Oracle database and its instance, each group having at least one member. The next section provides information concerning the purpose of the redo log files.
