Oracle 10g Application Server is a powerful, robust, and complex product. It's a combination web and application server with a back-end Oracle database. This product can do nearly anything you ask of it if you've architected, configured, and deployed it correctly. Just as some applications are small and others are huge, and support thousands of users with 7 — 24 availability, 10g AS can be configured to support either. However, to do this you must understand the architecture and deployment options of the product.

In this chapter, we'll cover the following:

• Overview. What 10g AS is and how web requests are processed .

• Architecture. 10g AS terminology, process components , and how they work together.

• Deployment topologies. A system is composed of multiple 10g AS installations, each performing a different role; we'll identify the deployment options available.
