Apple Pro Training Series: Final Cut Pro 5

 < Day Day Up >

During the editing process, you often need to take a closer look at a clip in the Timeline. You can magnify or zoom into your clips in two ways: vertically to appear taller, or horizontally to appear wider. Magnifying tracks does not in any way change the length of the clips in the sequence, only their appearance in the Timeline.

1.

In the bottom of the Timeline, move the pointer over the fourth control from the left, the Track Height control. Click different columns to see the track height options. Press Shift-T repeatedly to toggle through these options.

2.

Click the second track height column to return to that option.

3.

Choose Sequence > Settings, or press Cmd-0 (zero). Click the Timeline Options tab.

4.

Click the Thumbnail Display pop-up menu, and make sure Name Plus Thumbnail is selected.

In this pop-up menu, you can choose whether you want to view the clips in your Timeline with thumbnail images, just by name, or as a visual filmstrip. When the track height is at its smallest, the clip icons will not be displayed.

NOTE

This tab is also where you can enter a different starting timecode for your sequence.

5.

Click OK to close the window.

6.

Look at the bottom of the Timeline next to the Track Height control.

Directly beneath the tracks of the Timeline are a zoom control and zoom slider used to adjust the horizontal scale of the tracks and the position of the sequence within the Timeline.

7.

Drag the zoom control to the left to magnify or zoom into the sequence. Notice in the ruler area that the timecode numbers also expand and contract to reflect the zoom change.

TIP

You can also zoom into the Timeline by pressing Option-+ and zoom out by pressing Option- (minus sign).

8.

Drag the zoom slider left and right to change the portion of the sequence that is in view.

TIP

If the playhead is not visible in the current zoom, click the tiny purple line in the zoom slider area. This line represents the playhead location. Clicking it repeatedly will bring that area of the sequence into view.

9.

In the Tool palette, click the Zoom In tool (magnifying glass), or press Z, and click in the Timeline track area to zoom into that area.

NOTE

You can also use the Zoom In tool to enlarge a specific area of the sequence by dragging a marquee around that area.

10.

Click the first tool in the Tool palette, or press the A key, to return to the default Selection tool. Then press Shift-Z to view the entire sequence.
