Text Searching and Wildcards
SAP R/3 also allows you to search text fields by using wildcards . For example, if you don't know a product number for the material you need but do know it was something for a motor, you could use a wildcard to find the material code (see Figure 8.6).
Plain English
Wildcard
In poker, this is a card you can use to represent any card. In SAP R/3, a wildcard is a character you can use to represent any character or series of characters .
To learn how to use a wildcard, follow these steps to find the material number for an unknown material:
-
From the Selection of Search Method list dialog box appears (see Figure 8.6).
Figure 8.6. You use the wildcards in the Restrict Value Range dialog box.
-
For the example described earlier, you want to look for all records that contain the word motor. Type *MOTOR* . (In general, type any word that corresponds to your company's list, enclosed with * wildcard characters.)
-
Press Enter. SAP R/3 displays only those materials whose descriptions contain MOTOR (see Figure 8.7). Notice that the material code you used in Lesson 7 (1500-520 for 10-W-30 motor oil) appears on the list.
-
Double-click the code to carry it back to the Create Purchase Requisition: Item Overview screen.
