| When you are not working online, you should exit your mail and browser programs and log off (if you have a dial-up account). To do so, click the Close button for the program window. You are prompted to log off if you have a dial-up connection. If you are prompted to log off, select Yes or Disconnect. If you are not prompted to log off, right-click the connection icon in the taskbar and select Disconnect (see Figure 5.5). Figure 5.5. Use the connection icon in the system tray to log off or display connection information. The Absolute Minimum This chapter explains what you need to access the Internet for mail, Web browsing, or both. In particular, this chapter covers these key points: To get connected, you need a modem, an Internet service provider, a connection (usually a phone line or cable line), and software for email and Web browsing. You can use two programs included with Windows XP for email and Web browsing: Outlook Express and Internet Explorer. To set up a new connection, use Windows XP's New Connection Wizard, completing each of the required steps by entering specific information about your provider and connection. After you have set up your Internet account, you can log on to the Internet and check and send email as well as browse the Internet.
