Creating Client, Network, and Local Printers
-
A client printer is defined as a print device attached to an ICA client via a communications port or as a network printer for the local Windows operating system.
-
Network printers are defined as printers that reside on a print server outside the server farm or as a printer shared with an ICA client device or network workstation.
-
Local printers are defined as printers that are directly connected, via cable or port, to a MetaFrame XP server in the farm.
-
To support a client printer, a matching driver must be installed on each MetaFrame server that the client will connect to.
-
If an appropriate driver is installed on the MetaFrame server, Windows 32-bit clients will auto-create their printer by default.
-
DOS and Windows CE clients must have auto-creation settings configured for the device using the Citrix Management Console.
-
Auto-created printers are only available to the user's session they were auto-created in.
-
Print drivers can be added to the server by adding a printer, selecting the proper driver, finishing the wizard, and deleting the printer.
Replicating Print Drivers and Importing Print Servers
-
Print driver information is read from each server and stored in the data store.
-
Print drivers can be replicated to all servers (and new servers) in the farm from a single MetaFrame XP server.
-
Shared Printers outside the server farm are not readily available to ICA clients. The print server must be imported into the farm using the Citrix Management Console.
-
You can replicate print drivers to a single server or all servers in the farm.
-
Replicated print drivers can also be added to the auto-replication list so that new MetaFrame servers will automatically receive these drivers when added to the farm.
-
Print driver replication is platform/operating system-specific.
-
When a client driver name is different from its server driver name, use the Driver Mapping list to allow the client printer to auto-create.
-
The Driver Compatibility list gives you the power to allow or restrict the use of client print drivers in your farm.
