The Vector Shape window ( Figure 7.2 ) works much like the Paint window, though it has a much simpler tool palette ( Figure 7.3 ).

Figure 7.3. Here's a closer look at the Vector Shape window's tool palette.

There are several things you can do in the Paint window that you can't do in the Vector Shape window: You can't hide the tool palette, you can't use rulers, and you can't drag a cast member directly to the Stage. Otherwise, if you're comfortable with the basic operations of the Paint window, you'll be at home in the Vector Shape window as well.

To open the Vector Shape window:

  • Choose Window > Vector Shape.

To view or edit an existing vector-shape cast member:

  • Double-click the cast member in the Cast window.

The Vector Shape window opens (if it's not open already) and displays the selected cast member.

    or

If the Vector Shape window is already open and displaying a different cast member, click the Next Cast Member or Previous Cast Member button ( Figure 7.4 ) to step through vector-shape cast members in the order they appear in the Cast window.

To create a new vector-shape cast member:

  1. In the Vector Shape window, click the New Cast Member button.

A new, blank work area appears.

  2. Use one of the shape tools, either filled or unfilled, or the Pen tool to draw a shape. (See "Creating Vector Shapes" on the next page.)

Your newly created vector shape automatically occupies the first available position in the Cast window and becomes available for use in your movie.

To zoom in or out:

  • Choose View > Zoom, and select a zoom value from the submenu ( Figure 7.5 ).

Figure 7.5. The View > Zoom command lets you choose a specific zoom level, or simply zoom in or out.
