  • Policy-based data protection allows for better use of data protection resources. It also helps organizations comply with regulations.

  • A policy is a set of best practices that the organization must follow. Policies are a concrete expression of the data protection strategy.

  • Data Lifecycle Management (DLM) is a policy-based data management methodology. It recognizes that data has a life span based on age. DLM allows for more efficient use of data protection resources as older, less important data is not afforded the most expensive protection.

  • An important method of implementing DLM is through multi-tier storage architectures. When multiple levels are used for increasingly less expensive storage, more resources are available for more important data.
