Chapter 13.  Networking

The LAN cards devoted to Virtual Partitions can be used for a variety of purposes just as they would on a non-vPar system. When users or applications in two different vPars communicate, it is over the LAN. There is not any special provision in vPars for communicating in normal operation. (There is, however, special system administration communication among vPars, such as synchronization of the Virtual Partition Database, that takes place in a special way.) When establishing a communication session between two vPars, even if they are on the same server, the LAN interfaces on both vPars are used. This includes telnet, ftp, and the Berkely "r" commands such as rlogin. The following example shows a telnet session among two vPars used in many examples throughout the book. vPar cable1 (hostname cvhdcon3) initiates a telnet session with vPar cable2 (hostname cvhdcon4) in this example:

# hostname cvhdcon3 <-- start on cable1 # telnet cvhdcon4 <-- telnet to cable2 Trying... Connected to cvhdcon4. Escape character is '^]'. You can use telnet, rlogin, or other such connection methods only if you have two networking cards in your system - one for each vPar. This is true for other functionality as well, such as the backups from a vPar to another vPar or system with a local tape drive, which require a network card on both systems. I consider one networking card devoted to each vPar a necessity.

There is a substantial amount of networking background information in the remainder of the chapter.
