Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Unleashed (2nd Edition)

 <  Day Day Up  >

The following are best practices from this chapter:

  • Carefully plan which Exchange Server 2003 servers should use Remote Desktop for Administration or Remote Administration (HTML) for remote management.

  • Restrict Remote Desktop for Administration or Remote Administration (HTML) access on Exchange Server 2003 servers that are facing the Internet (for example, limiting access to a predefined IP address or set of IP addresses).

  • Have a person in the vicinity of the server that is being managed remotely assist the administrator in case network connectivity is lost.

  • Use care when modifying network configurations over a Remote Desktop for Administration connection.

  • Use disconnect and reset timeout values for Remote Desktop for Administration connections.

  • Plan and coordinate remote administration efforts to reduce the number of attempts to access Exchange Server 2003 servers remotely.

  • Do not implement Terminal Services on an Exchange server solely to manage Exchange Server 2003 remotely.

  • Use the advanced view of the ESM when using multiple routing and administrative groups.

  • Use RPC over HTTPS or Remote Desktop for Administration with high encryption when managing Exchange Server 2003 servers remotely over public networks using ESM.
