OVERVIEW
The information that has to be exchanged between two entities (persons or machines) in a communication system can be in one of the following formats:
-
Text
-
Voice
-
Image
-
Video
In an electrical communication system, the information is first converted into an electrical signal. For instance, a microphone is the transducer that converts the human voice into an analog signal. Similarly, the video camera converts the real-life scenery into an analog signal. In a digital communication system, the first step is to convert the analog signal into digital format using analog-to-digital conversion techniques. This digital signal representation for various types of information is the topic of this chapter.
