The style of the monitor enclosure you'll build to contain the heartbeat's path is like a relic from the earliest days of such devices. Before you build the monitor, you'll create a sequence of your heartbeat animation so that it loops continuously in the background. Here are the steps:
1. | Create a new composition named Heart Monitor in your Project window's Comps folder, using the NTSC DV, 720x480 comp preset, with Duration 10;00 seconds. |
2. | Add the Heartbeat composition to the Heart Monitor Timeline at time 0;00. |
3. | Duplicate the Heartbeat layer nine times so you have a total of ten layers. |
4. | Select all the Heartbeat layers, and choose Animation > Keyframe Assistant > Sequence Layers. Make sure the Overlap option is unchecked and Transition is set to Dissolve Front Layer. The Heartbeat Timeline after sequencing the layers

5. | Create a new comp-size Solid layer named Grid that's any color. Make sure the layer is above all the other layers in the Timeline. |
6. | Apply Effect > Render > Grid to the Grid layer, and set the effect's Border (grid line size) property to 2.5. Change the color to green. |
7. | To smooth out the grid lines, apply Effect > Blur & Sharpen > Fast Blur effect to the Grid layer, and set the effect's Blurriness property to 2. Settings for the Grid layer's effects
|
8. | To create a bulge in the virtual glass of your monitor, choose Layer > New > Adjustment Layer, and name the layer Bulge. Since an Adjustment layer only works on layers that are below it, make sure the layer is at the top of the Timeline. |
9. | Apply Effect > Distort > Bulge to the Bulge layer. Use these effect settings: Horizontal Radius: 320 Vertical Radius: 320 Bulge Height: 0.7 Settings for the adjustment layer's Bulge effect The Heart Monitor composition
