Apple Training Series: Mac OS X System Administration Reference, Volume 1

Lesson 11. Planning and Deploying Directory Services

Time

This lesson takes approximately 1 hour to complete.

Goals

Evaluate directory-service needs and use to determine how many replica servers, if any, are required

Construct a plan for deploying networked user accounts for a mix of Mac OS X and Windows computers

Construct a plan for providing Mac OS Xspecific directory-service data to Mac OS X computers on a Windows-dominant network

Understand the security precautions you should take when setting up a directory server

Because directory services constitute a critical component of modern operating systems, you need to create a directory-services plan before you deploy your client and server computers. In developing the plan, you will need to decide how many directory-servers you'll require, how they will be used, and where they will be deployed. As part of the deployment, you'll need to consider how to keep the servers secure while providing optimum performance.
