Taking digital pictures and filming digital video clips are only half the fun. The Pics&Videos application makes it possible to edit, organize, and beam pictures and video clips with ease. Perhaps the most important task in regard to pictures and video clips is storing them on a memory card and deleting them to make space for new pictures and clips. Follow these steps to copy and delete media objects (pictures and video clips) in the Pics&Videos application: Note The Pics&Videos application is closely related to the Camera/Camcorder application, but it is, in fact, its own separate application. However, you can quickly switch between the two applications by tapping the button in the lower-left corner of each one. 1. | Press the Menu button, and then scroll down to and select the Copy to Card menu command. The Copy to Card screen opens, as shown in Figure 12.7. Figure 12.7. Use the Copy to Card screen to copy media objects to a memory card.
| 2. | Tap the media objects that you want to copy to a memory card. A plus sign appears next to each selected object, as you can see in Figure 12.7. | 3. | Tap the Copy button to carry out copying the media objects. Keep in mind that this is a copy, not a move, so the pictures still reside in main memory until you delete them. Tip To turn off the microphone while filming a video clip, press the Menu button and set the Microphone option to Off. | 4. | Speaking of deleting media objects, to delete an object, just select it in the Pics&Video screen, press the Menu button, and then scroll down and select Delete in the Media menu. Then tap the Delete button to confirm the deletion. | While I'm on the subject of storing media objects, it's worth tackling the issue of photo albums. I'm using the term "photo album" a bit loosely because a Treo photo album can contain video clips in addition to pictures, but you get the idea. To access the photo albums on your device in the Pics&Videos application, follow these steps: 1. | Press the Menu button, navigate over to the Album menu, and then scroll down to and select the Manage Albums menu command. The Manage Albums screen opens, as shown in Figure 12.8. Figure 12.8. In the Manage Albums screen, you can create, rename, and delete photo albums in main memory and on a memory card.
Tip If you're interested in taking video to the next level by watching movies and other video formats on your Treo, you might want to check out The Core Pocket Media Player (TCPMP). TCPMP is an open-source application that you can download free at http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/. | 2. | The Manage Albums screen reveals how media objects are stored separately in main memory (Device) and on a memory card (Card). You create photo albums in each area of memory separately to organize media objects stored in each area. To create a new photo album, tap the New button and enter the name of the photo album (see Figure 12.9). Figure 12.9. The New Album screen prompts you to enter the name of the new photo album.
| 3. | Tap the OK button to continue and select the media objects to be stored in the photo album. Figure 12.10 shows the Organize Pond album, where I can tap and select the pictures to be placed in the newly created Pond photo album; notice the plus signs beside the selected pictures. Figure 12.10. The Organize Pond screen enables me to tap and select pictures for my newly created Pond photo album.
Tip To switch between viewing media objects in main memory and the current memory card in the Pics&Videos application, tap the first or second box in the upper-right corner of the screen; you use the third box to access pictures that have been uploaded to the Web. | 4. | When you're finished selecting pictures for the album, tap the Done button. Back in the main Pics&Videos screen, you can easily view just the pictures in the new photo album by tapping the pick list at the top of the Pics&Videos screen and selecting the album. | 5. | Within a given photo album, you can sort the media objects in it by selecting one of several sort criteria from the Album menusorting an album by date, name, or size as well as manual sorting. To sort a photo album manually, tap and drag the media object in the list to change its order. This order is important if you choose to view the album as a slide show; see "View Your Pictures as a Slide Show" later in the chapter. | Tip To select and deselect multiple media objects, tap the Space key as you scroll through the objects. Similar to individual media objects, you can beam, upload, send, and copy photo albums with little effort. You can find commands for these tasks on the Album menu. In addition to organizing pictures in photo albums, you can edit and manipulate the pictures. Follow these steps to edit your pictures in the Pics&Videos application: Tip You can also delete media objects by pressing the Backspace key while in the Pics&Videos screen without having any objects selected. The Delete screen opens, where you can tap and select pictures and video clips for deletion. 1. | The first way to edit a picture is to establish its position for viewing. Many pictures you take will be larger than the Treo's screen and, therefore, aren't entirely visible at once. If you tap a picture in the main list to view it full screen, you can then tap and drag the picture to determine which part is displayed. This new picture position is remembered for future viewings; this feature is especially important for slide shows. Note The pick list at the top of the Pics&Videos application actually contains both categories and photo albums. All and Unfiled are default categories; all photo albums are custom created. By default, all new pictures and video clips are stored in the Unfiled category until you move them into a photo album. | 2. | You might find that you need to rotate a picture. If so, select the picture, press the Menu button, and then scroll down to and select the Rotate Picture command. The Rotate Picture screen opens with options for selecting rotated versions of the picture in 90-degree increments (see Figure 12.11). Figure 12.11. You can use the Rotate Picture screen to rotate a picture in 90-degree increments.
| 3. | Perhaps more interesting than rotating a picture is being able to draw directly on a picture. To draw on a picture, select the picture, press the Menu button, and then scroll down to and select the Draw on Picture command. The Draw on Picture screen opens, as shown in Figure 12.12, and you can draw on the picture using several different pen strokes and colors as well as add text. Figure 12.12. You can use the Draw on Picture screen to draw on and add text to a picture.
| 4. | In the lower-right corner of the screen are buttons for changing the color and pen stroke width and for adding text to a picture. I hope you find a more important use for this feature than drawing a beard on yourself! | 5. | You can also edit each media object on your device to add text notes, if you like. To edit the details for a media object, select Edit Details from the Media menu. In the Media Details screen that opens, you can view information about the media object, change its photo album, and add notes (see Figure 12.13). Tap Done when you're finished with the media details. Figure 12.13. The Media Details screen displays information about a media object along with options for changing its album, entering a text note, and even deleting the object.
| 6. | One last tweak you can make to a picture involves adding an audio clip. Maybe you want to record a brief story to explain a picture. If so, select Add Audio from the Media menu. The familiar Recorder screen opens and allows you to record an audio clip that's attached to the picture. | As you've seen, you can do quite a lot with pictures and video clips on your Treo, but you're still not finished. Read on to find out how to assemble media objects to create a mobile handheld slide show. Tip You can easily organize a photo album at any time by selecting the album from the pick list near the top of the Pics&Videos screen and then tapping the Organize Album button (second from right) near the bottom of the screen. |
