Customizing Windows XP: Visual QuickProject Guide

Restyle the Start Menu p. 36

  • You may have noticed that the Start menu's Properties dialog box gives you a Classic Windows Start menu option.

This option doesn't just serve as nostalgia for Windows past. It offers a more stream-lined Start menu, one that takes less screen space.

The classic Start menu has its own customization dialog box with customization features that are different from those of the standard Start menu.

Convert Links to Menus p. 40

  • You may have noticed throughout this chapter that the Start menu has a submenu called My Recent Documents. In Windows XP Professional, this is always turned on. In Windows XP Home Edition, you'll have to turn on My Recent Documents to see it in the Start menu. Just right-click Start and click Properties. Then click Customize and select List my most recently opened documents. (Windows XP Professional doesn't give you the option to turn off My Recent Documents.)

Add A Folder p. 44

  • Another way to bring up Windows Explorer is to press Windows-E.
