IIS has a couple of backup and restoration features that can complement a regular system and data backup schedule. Specifically, IIS lets you save configuration data for Web sites to XML files, which can be used to re-create the Web site settings. IIS also performs general configuration backups automatically. Neither of these features restores Web site data—you’ll still need a full-fledged backup program for that, but they can help protect your IIS configuration.

To use these features, use the following list as a guide:

• To save the configuration of a Web site to a file, right-click the Web site in the Internet Information Services console, choose All Tasks, Save Configuration To File from the shortcut menu.

• To restore a previously saved Web site configuration, right-click the Web Sites container, choose New, Web Site (From File) from the shortcut menu.

• To back up or restore the IIS configuration, right-click the computer name in the Internet Information Services console, choose All Tasks, Backup/Restore Configuration from the shortcut menu.
