Upgrading and Repairing Servers

Intel and AMD server-class processors are supported by Windows Server 2000, Windows Server 2003, Novell Netware 6.x, x86-compatible Linux distributions, SCO UnixWare 7.1.x, and Sun Solaris for x86. It might be necessary to download and install service packs, patches, or updates to fully support the newest processors, particularly if your server's operating system was introduced before your processor model was developed.

RISC-based servers are supported by the vendor's UNIX implementation and sometimes by various Linux distributions as well. See the vendor's website for details.

For more information about server operating systems, see Chapter 18, "Server Platforms: Network Operating Systems."
