Scott Muellers Upgrading and Repairing Laptops, Second Edition

Despite their name , laptop computers usually do not work too well on one's lap. They may be too heavy or too light. And they are often too hot. Many people use laptops on the tops of their desks, but a number of accessory platforms promise to make laptop usage more comfortable no matter where it is done.

Desktop

Desktop platforms for laptops are designed to accomplish one of two tasks . The first is to elevate the laptop slightly to provide a more comfortable typing position. The second is to provide the ability to swivel, which is ideal for presentations.

One interesting device in this category is the Laptop Desk (from www.laptopdesk.net), which is shown in Figure 14.25. This platform is not only meant for the desk but for other surfaces as well. In its folded configuration, the Laptop Desk elevates the rear of the laptop, thus making typing easier. When you unfold it, this platform reveals a small surface to the side of the laptop that can be used with an external mouse. In this configuration, the platform will work on almost any surface ”even one's lap.

Automobile

Two kinds of notebook stands are available for cars . The first is a rugged stand that is bolted to the floor of the car, usually on the transmission hump.

The second is a removable stand that occupies the passenger seat or is attached to the steering wheel.

A company called GoOffice offers the AutoExec with Non-Skid Top (A) AEF-01 (see Figure 14.26). It features a nonskid top surface, a slide-out work surface, and a large storage area for a laptop, files, and tools. To keep it steady, you can secure it to the passenger seat with a seatbelt. It is available from ConnectGlobally.com.

Arkon Resources sells a simple device called the CM175 Executive Laptop Steering Wheel Mount (see Figure 14.27). It snaps over the steering wheel and can support a notebook weighing up to 10 pounds . As the company says on its Web site, do not use while driving.
