It s possible to have a long document and never need to work with sections. But if you want variety and flexibility in your formats, page orientation, and headers and footers, you ll need to learn how to create and work with sections.

To add a section break, position the cursor where you want to add the section break. Choose Break from the Insert menu. Select the type of section break you want to add (see Table 6-1 for an overview of the different types).

To remove a section break, highlight the section break line (you need to be in Normal view or have paragraph marks turned on in other views to see it) and press Delete. The format of the section that follows the break will be applied to the section that precedes the break.

Next Page
Creates a section break that ends the current page and begins the next section on a fresh page
Continuous
Begins a new section but does not advance to the next page
Even Page
Begins the new section on the next even-numbered page
Odd Page
Starts the new section on the next odd-numbered page

Depending on the view you are working in, you may not see anything at all after you add the section break. In Web Layout view and Print Layout view, no insert line is visible. If you are working in Normal view, you see a double dotted line with the name of the break type in the center.
