Distiller processes PostScript files based on a large number of variables. Changing any of these variables changes the conversion process, resulting in a slightly different PDF file. Some changes produce noticeable and easily understood effects. For example, changing the image compression settings can make the file size smaller or larger, while degrading or improving the appearance of the image. Other changes can seem arcane and have no apparent effect, except in very special circumstances. For example, turning off the Preserve Level 2 Copypage Semantics option produces no noticeable difference in the file whatsoever, but it can prevent the file from printing to older image setters. Do not edit Distiller settings without good reason. For most users, the only reason to edit settings will be on the advice of a print professional or technical support person.

Select a Setting

Choose a setting from the Default Settings drop-down list to use as the basis for your new, custom setting. Don't worry about possibly ruining any of these settings. You cannot save your changes over any of these preset settings.

Edit a Setting

From the Settings menu, select the Edit Adobe PDF Settings command. This brings up the Adobe PDF Settings dialog box. The left side of the dialog box shows the current setting and the six settings categories. The rest of the dialog box is made up of the individual settings for the current category.

Go through each category, changing individual settings as desired.

In the General category you can enter a description for your new custom setting as well as file and page options such as compatibility, compression, and resolution.

In the Images category you can set the downsampling, compression, and image quality for color , grayscale, and monochrome images.

Use the Fonts category to set font embedding options as well as to select specific fonts to be always embedded or excluded from embedding.

The Color category lets you choose the color settings, management policies, and working spaces for onscreen display and printed output.

The Advanced category contains miscellaneous advanced and document structure options.

Finally, the Standards category contains options for ensuring that your document is compliant with different subsets of the PDF file format, including PDF/A and PDF/X.

Save a Setting

When you are done, click the Save As button. Name your new settings file and click the Save button. Do not change the file type or location because Distiller will not be able to use your new custom settings file if you do.
