The bulk of these port numbers are set internally by the FileMaker products in question and cannot be changed or overridden. Exceptions are noted in Table 13.1.
Table 13.1. FileMaker Network Ports
Port
Service
80
The default port for HTTP (that is, for web traffic). This may be the default port for any web server being used to serve FileMaker data to the Web. This port is controlled in the settings for the web server and can be freely altered.
591
FileMaker, Inc. reserved port 591 for traffic to the FileMaker Web Companion, which was the web publishing technology available in FileMaker 4-6. Despite the fact that this is a reserved port, it was always possible to use a port other than 591 for Web Companion traffic, though administrators often found it convenient to use this one. (The port was settable in the plug-ins preference for the Web Companion, within the FileMaker client in FileMaker 6 and before.) The port is still reserved to FileMaker, Inc. and so makes a good second choice as a web port when the default web port of 80 is in use.
2399
Port used for ODBC and JDBC access to FileMaker Server Advanced. In addition to enabling ODBC/JDBC on the server and in the privilege sets of individual files, traffic must be able to flow to port 2399 on the server from any ODBC/JDBC clients.
5003
Port used for network access to hosted FileMaker databases. In order to open hosted FileMaker databases, traffic must be able to flow to port 5003 on the server from any FileMaker clients on the network.
16008-16018
These ports are used by the Web Publishing Engine. When configuring FileMaker Server Advanced on multiple machines, if the Web Publishing Engine and the web server are installed on different machines, then at a minimum traffic must be able to flow between the two machines on ports 16016 and 16018.
50003
FileMaker Server port for remote administration. In addition to enabling remote administration in the server configuration, traffic must be able to flow to port 50003 on the server from any remote instances of the Server Administration tool.
50006
FileMaker Server Helper port for remote administration. In addition to enabling remote administration in the server configuration, traffic must be able to flow to port 50006 on the server from any remote instances of the Server Administration tool.
