Objective 1. Insert and Link in Word an Excel Object

Activity 4.1. Inserting and Linking an Excel Object

In this activity you will add the Excel chart to the agenda page for the meeting. By selecting options in the Insert object dialog box, you can link your Word document to the Excel chart in another file.

1.

Start Word, and then Open the file Weekly_Sales_Chart from the folder that contains your project files. Save the file as Weekly_Sales_Chart_Firstname_Lastname

2.

In the document, position the insertion point below the heading Current Week Sales Chart.

You can change the screen display to see the chart position on the page more easily.

3.

On the Standard toolbar, click the Zoom arrow, and then click Whole Page.

4.

On the Insert menu, click Object. The Object dialog box displays.

5.

In the Object dialog box, click the Create from File tab, and then click Browse. The Browse dialog box opens. The Excel file that contains the sales information you want to use is named Sales_Totals. It includes a chart sheet that shows the totals for the salespeople.

6.

In the Browse window, from the Look in list, select the folder that contains your project files, click the file Sales_Totals, and then click Insert. The path for the file displays in the File name box.

7.

Click the Link to file check box, and then click OK.

This creates the link to the Excel file and enables changes from the Excel document to update the Word document. The chart appears in the Word document, but it will extend beyond the edge of the page. Compare your screen with Figure 4.2.
